PRESENTATION OF PRIZES J- I ; ■ '• ' '' 1 ! CEREMONY IN KING ST. HALL Concluding the 1939 school year, prizes and certificates earned by the pupils of the Whakatane District High and Primary Schools, were pre sen ted by the Chairman of the Committee, the Rev. K. J. Watson, in the King Street HaH on Thursday afternoon.
The headmaster, Mr C. C. Southcy, said that the arrangement to hol<3 the prize-giving in the hall was made when the weather prospects were un favourable. Mr Southey said that it seemed to him< to be preferable fo hold the ceremony indoors.
"It is usual for a member of the committee to include iit his speech a word or two of advice," said the Rev. S. G. Caul ton who addressed the pupils on' the introd action ot' the chairman.
"When you do such things as algebra or trigonometry, don't think that they are silly subjects. They are really like scaffolding around a build ing. You can't have a nice tall building without scaffolding and those subjieets which you may consider to be unnecessary, are a parallel to a scaffolding around the- biiiMliig of your career."
The speaker said that there are people to-day who have not a mind of their own. The purpose of education was to equip them with the necessary ability to reason things out.
"My congratulations to these who have won prizes and to all of you; to the staff, who are to be complimented on their work, and particularly to those who a-re spending their last day at school," concluded Mr CatiTton.
The Rev K. J. Watson expressed the committee's deep appreciation of the e{Torts of Mr Southey and his staff. "On behalf of the committee I thank them most heartily and wish them a Happy Christmas and an enjoyable holiday."
