POPULAR TEACHER
FAREWELL TO MR H. E. PAIN
FUNCTION AT AWAKERI
The regard in which Mr H. E. Pain has been held in the district during his term as headmaster of the Awakeri School was demonstrated last Thursday night when presentations we re made to him on behalf of the staff, parents, and pupils during an interval in the school's annual concert held in the Awakeri Hall.
The Chairman of the School Committee, Mr N. MacDonakl, in presenting Mr Pain with a wallet of notes as a token from parents and residents of the district, said that Mr Pain had proved himself an excellent headmaster who had always taken an interest in the district as a whole and who had been indefatigable in his efforts for the children. Nothing had been too much for him and the district regretted losing his services, while congratulating him upon his promotion. The parents and friends wished Mr Pain happiness and success.
Peggy Claris, representing the girls of the school, asked Mrs Pain to accept a set of crystal and Wallace Luxton, acting for the boys, spoke briefly in presenting Mr Pain with a fountain pen and pencil. The headmaster was the recipient also of marks of esteem from the teachers and the AAvakeri Football Club.
In acknowledgment, Mr Pain spoke of the happy relations which had always existed between him and the parents. The work he had done was made possible only by the wonderful co-operation between them.
Mr Pain stressed the importance of parents taking an interest in educational matters and pointed out the value of secondary school experience. In this respect, said Mr Pain, lie would like to point out that the Government had provided a bus for the purpose of transport to the Whn katanc District High School and it is up to parents to do their part.
"I woukl ask that you accord to my successor Hie same measure of support that I have been fortunate enough to receive," said Mr Pain, "and I know that if you do, his stay here will be as happy as mine."
Mr Pain concluded with a reference to his efforts at the school, saying that any credit was reflected glory because it woukl have been impossible too achieve results without the loyal and efficient support of his staff.
Appreciation of Services.
At a meeting of the Whaliatanc Sub-Branch of ihe Educational Institute, Mr 11. E. Pain was presented with two volumes as an appreciation of his services on the committee.
Surprise Party.
Last Wednesday evening representatives of the Methodist Church formed a surprise party and visited Mr Pain at his residence, Awakeri.
The Rev. G. Lucas, .in handing a cake-dish to Mr and Mrs Pain as evidence of the regard in which they were held in Church circles, referred to Mr Pain's activities as a local preacher and as a prominent member of the Methodist Church. Ho wished them both happiness and success in the future. Messrs Albiston and Hellyar also spoke. Responding, Mr Pain said that he was-glad to be associated with them and would look back on many happy days spent in their company.
