ROADS v. RAILWAYS
Sir, —In reference to the article appearing in the Beacon of December 11th, Roads v Railways, a very important point has been omitted by the writer, who deserves to be congratulated on his effort. The point is the fact that road construction imposes a very mucf* lower demand- on our overseas funds than railway construction. In fact (me rtiight go so far as ta say that a Careful survey of road construction would reveal' that, but for reinforcing steel for bridge work there need be no demand on overseas funds. So that such work can. be carried on throughout the war period with advantage to engineers, workmen, business people and general public alikf.. If we could just sink our differences and get on with the job, keeping local folk fully employed, the benefits would be general. Yours etc., R. W. SCHQFIELD-
