WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT WAIMANA , (Beacon Correspondent) The December meeting of the Wai-::mana-Nukuhou Women's Institute was held in the Waimana Hall last Wednesday. Mrs Marra provided over a very good attendance of mem bers. Mrs F. J. Savage most capably acted as secretary in the absence of Mrs Wjdde 3nr. The meeting opened with the sing ing o£ the Institute song. The minutes of the previous meeting were read nnd confirmed. Business arising from incoming correspondence was dealt with* An appeal was made to members for books and magazines to be forivarded to the soldiers in camp. Members also brought books and magazines to be sent to the hospital. It was decided to hold the annual picnic on January 25, 1940, at the usual place» Mrs E. P. Wool field gave a most full report on the recent Council meeting held in Wellington, also an interesting talk on the Exhibition at Wellington. Mrs WOolfield said that the Women's Court was outstanding and Avell worth seeing. Members of the Drama Circle presented a plav entitled "Ladies in Waiting,'' which was appreciated. The Glee Clnb members entertained by singing Christmas carols, Mrs King playing the accompaniments. Mrs Woolfield spoke on the meeting held in Whakatane recently in connection with. Red Cross work. The month's competitions were as follows:— Best flower* Mrs I. Savage 1, Mrs Mitchell 2, Miss M. Hughes 3. Bran biscuits: Mrs Stevenson 1, Mrs Burnett 2. Miss Wardlaw 3. Collection vegetables: Mrs I. Savage 1, Mrs Fleming 2, Mrs Eagle 3. Xmas novelty costing not more than 1/6: Mrs I. Savage (doll) 1, Mrs Burnett (foot stool) 1, Mrs Gallagher 3. The delegates to attend the Red Cross meetings were appointed, Mrs Marra and Mrs Burnett. ' The hostesses served a dainty tea, - and a hearty vote of thanks wa? pass •ed to theni and the judges.
