WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING IN WHAKATANE

The December meeting of the Whakatane Women's Institute was held in the Parish HalL on the oth inst, with the president; Mrs Armstrong, in the chair.

The business of the meeting proceeded smoothly. It was agreed to hold the annual picnic on the 2!) th January, in conjunction with the Returned Soldiers' Picnic nt Thornton Beach. It is desired to make the day particularly interesting for the children, as ther-j will be no Xmas party this j'ear. 1 It was decided to hold a stall at the Summer Show to sell the articles made by the Blind Institute all arrangements in this connection being left in the hands of Mrs Berry. The matter of paying the expenses of delegates Lo Annual Conference was discussed at some length and a proposal to pay same at the rate of los per day was made by Mrs Wheeler, duly seconded and carried. The Roll Call for the day "What I would like n't' the Xmas Tree" brought many amusing requests, from a trip to the Exhibition to a Goose, a £5 note, and a handkerchief A reading on Xmas Customs in Other Lands was given by Mrs Albiston and greatly appreciated. There followed demonstrations by several members, of Xmas novelties to be made by hand, and useful suggestions were showi and explained. The Best Fiowcr competit ion was won by Mrs Luxton, and the Worked Dressing Tanle Set by Mrs Larsen, the latter being ail outstanding example of beautiful work. Afternoon tea was served after the distribution of the presents from the Xmas Tree, which was under the care of Mrs Murphy. Members opened their parcels with the enthusiasm of children, and the true Xmas syjirit was shown by the exclamations of pleasure at the unexpected gifts. The afternoon - ended ' fittingly with the singing of carols !by the members, led by the Glee Club, with Mrs Armstrong at the piano.
