EX-WHAKATANE BOY JOINS UP WITH NAVY Word has been received by Mr AJ. Canning of Whakatane, from his son Mr Maynard Canning, who is present in the Old Country, and who has recently joined up with the navy on a temporary basis for twelve months. Mr Canning who will be remembered by many local residents says in his letter that he is now in Belfast, as a member of an armed cruiser. His ship is mainly engaged in convoy work, which the writer states is interesting enough. His friends in Whakatane will be glad to learn that he is in . first class health and has Found ft happy group of companions In the service.
