HARVESTING

ACTIVITY IN COUNTRY

FINE WEATHER WELCOME

Fine weather at this time of the year means greatly increased activity for the farmer. This year, owing to an unusually dry spell over the months of September and October, the ensilage and hay crops are not up to standard, but the rain of the last two Aveeks have urged the growth somewhat and the majority of farmers will endeavour to complete their harvesting operations before Christmas.

Already, in the country, are to be seen the long arms of the stackers swinging or the high poles, wisps of hay floating from the loads clawed by the steel prongs of the grab. Men, diminutive in comparison with the stacks on which they stand: horses, swinging past with a rajftle of trace chains as they sweep the dry grass towards the stacker and mowers cutting the grass for next winter's fodder, to the accompaniment of a metallic purring.

Such is what can be seen from the road of the busiest period of the year, for the dairy farmer.
