BRISK TRADE
OPTIMISTIC OUTLOOK
SHOPPING IN WHAKATANE
All shopkeepers in Whakatane are experiencing a period of extremely brisk trading. There is always that time before Christmas when the approach of holidays and the buying of presents brings increased business to shops, but it is worthy of comment that in wartime this volume of shopping has not diminished.
There has been a general impression that the Import Restrictions would affect the stocks in the majority of the shops, but apart from one or two lines, there is no apparent shortage. In quite a few cases where toys and general Christmas goods previously imported have been restricted, New Zealand made articles of the same nature arc for sale. Grocers have the usual range of goods on their shelves while the fruiterers also are securing plentiful supplies. The public is extending its patronage as in former years, the state of war seemingly not affecting its purchasing power, and business men generally are confident that the evidence of prosperity will be maintained.
