The Bag of Plenty Beacon Published Wednesdays and Fridays. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 29th, 1939. DAIRY FIGURES RISE
THE broad green acres of the. Rangitaiki Plains are once again proving their fertility and wonderful butterfat value in the figures recently released .by the Rangitaiki Dairy Company. The figures indicate in very complete and convincing fashion, that given a favourable spring, the Plains are capable of producing dairy returns second to none in the Dominion. For the first four months of the new season (July Ist to October 31st) no less than 1075 tons of butter were manufactured. This figure is well in advance of last years (1025 tons) but has not reached the record season of 1937, when for the same period the company had the proud distinction of placing on the market no less than 1287 tons. The new season however follows hard on the heels of one of the worst, when with depleted herds, and a drought of almost first class magnitude, the agriculturalists were faced with prospeqts almost comparable: to the worst of the slump years. While there appears to be little just ification to hope for an improvement on the 1937 figures, it is pleasing to reflect that since the beginning of November the company has been manufacturing some 820 boxes or tons of butter daily. The vaguaries of peak years are known to all dairymen, and there is no reason to suppose that the future will vary from the satisfactory upward curve at present indicated. Whereas in 1937, the flush of the season darned the greatest production by far, that year showed a heavy tailing off in the Autumn, bringing even the record average down. The 1939 spring us considered most favourable from a productive point of view and the recent .saturation of warm rain may yet spell a rapid rase. If this were so farmers will once again be able to look forward to record figures of an article which knows no peer.
