NATURAL MONUMENTS

TREES AND OTHERS BRITAIN'S EXAMPLE A recent .statement of tlie Hon. F. Langstone, Commissioner of State Forests, in regard to the listing ami preservation of historic trees, has received the hearty approval of the Forest and Bird Protection Society's executive, but members have expressed the opinion that the movement should have a wider scope than trees, and should be concerned with the preservation of various natural monuments.

Creating Duties. This matter was reviewed in the presidential address at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute, in 1928. "Some broader outlook than the mere preservation of vegetation is desirable," it was stated. "Some office or duty should be instituted, not necessarily entailing the appointment of new office:*?, but rather the creating of new duties to be appropriately laid on the shoulders of resident local officers, whose duty is should be to safeguard for posterity what are called in other countries natural monuments.'' Good Example. A -good example for New Zealand has been set in Great Britain by the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty. This national organisation has an excellent record of achievements. It has managed to save many historic landmarks and beauty spots which were threatened ivitli damage or destruction by the ordinary "March of progress."
