TAXI CONTROL

Sir —In the Borough report in your paper of Friday 17th inst we noticed a Avord concerning "Taxis." The Mayor stated that "They asked for it, and they are getting it." We would like to know what he means, and is he aware that all taxis and buses in New Zealand are all under or coming under the Transport Board in the near future. We have §W all paid our annual fee to the Borough £3 per car and have also had to pay an extra £2 to the Transport Board. Did we ask for this extra payment, and did we ask 'for tfl\e.> meters to be enforced upon us at expense of £60 per car. The taxi « fares in Whakatane are as cheap and in some instances cheaper than the surrounding Boroughs and Counties and if meters are installed the public will be asked to pay the extra fid or 3d per fare that they are not paying now under our zoning scheme operating in the Borough. It would appear that the Mayor's sole concern for Whakatane's essential public services over which the Borough Council has in the past held licencing control, has been the petty amount, namely £21 per annum derived by way of hire licenses in return for which we get two white squares painted on the Strand.
