MUTTON BIRD SEASON
WEEK-END EXCURSION TO WHALE ISLAND OYER 6000 BIRDS TAKEN The mutton bird season in Wha j katane opened last Aveek-end when approximately 120 local Maoris visited Whale Island and raided the nest ing ground and exercised their traditional right vested in them by the Government, to take the birds in their breeding period. The week-end was profitably spent and all hands were busily employed till noon on Sunday when the first catch was despatched to town by the Harbour Board launch. It is estimated that some GOOO birds were carried, and the remainder of the hunters stopped on the Island till this morning. The launch will return today for the balance which however is not expected to exceed a few hundreds. The yield this year is particularly gratifying and Maoris who have taken part in the annual visit to Whale Island in the past look upon the 'take' as one of the best for many years.
