ACTION CONFIRMED

MAYOR ORDERS RESTRICTIONS USE OF HOSES CONFINED At the meeting of the Borough Council last Monday night the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, asked for confirmation of his action in advertising restrictions in the use of hoses. "The fault," said His Worship, "lies not so much with the use of hoses as the misuse of them. We can't stand that. If- a person likes to use a hose in the usual way, we don't mind. When it is realised that the people of Whakatane have been using 200,000 gallons of water per day, it will be seen how serious the position is." Cr Canning said: "It is the old, old story. It comes up every year. I am glad to see that the Mayor allows the use of hoses at a certain houtf. That is an encouragement to gardeners." Cr Shapley propounded the problem from the viewpoint of the Fire Board. "We can't have a modern andefficient fire brigade unless there water available. If the waste continues, some drastic action will be ne-

cessary."

The action of the Mayor in imposng restrictions was approved.
