ROAD TO HEADS
DANGER TO TRAFFIC
NEED FOR SIGNPOST
"The danger to pedestrians in general and to children in particular in using the Pleads road when traffic -was on it, Avas stressed at the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday night.
The A.A. patrol reported to his superiors that the Clerk to the Coun cil had requested the erection of a signpost warning motorists to exercise extreme care, and the patrol forwarded to the council a letter he had received from the Totiring Manager. In this, the Touring Manager .gave it as his opinion that motorists who did not take notice of a 30 m.p.h. sign would certainly not observe any further danger signal. He suggested that a traffic inspector patrol the area, Uniformity Desired. The Mayor said: "We ought to take the matter further. I think that a sign erected would do seme good." . Cr Canning reasoned that the coun cil should erect the signpost itself and it was its concern. This drew the observation from His Worship, "They (the A.A.) don't like it. They want uniformity in the sign-posting." i Cr S. S. Shapley: I walked round 4 road, when the benzine restric- ' v tions were in and walking was necessary, and I found that a sign is absolutely essential. The traffic causes an acute dust nuisance with speed. Not only that, but the stones thrown up by the wheels force pedestrians into the grass on the side of the road. We ought to put up a sign and then have one or two prosecutions. Continuing, Cr Shapley observed that: In England, motorists pay great respect to signs and it is very definite over there that they have to limit their speed to 30 miles per hour in populous areas. I think that if the A.A. won't put up a sign, the council ought to. The Mayor: We can't prosecute for a speed under 30 miles per hour but that speed is definitely too fast for the road. Cr Sullivan pointed out that part ; "°f ;.the 1 road was County ground and •discussiom - lapsed. '' " i ; r
