NEGLIGENT DRIVING

LORRY DRIVER CHARGED

STRUCK CHILD ON HORSE

A sequel to an early morning accident, in which a P.W.D. lorry struck a child riding a horse to school, took place in the Whakatane Court sitting before Mr W. H. Freeman S.M. last Wednesday, when George Francis Jeffrey, was charged with negligent driving.

Constable Hedley said that on February 10th last, defendant was driving along a mountain road, and on swinging round a corner encountered a ten year old child on horseback. The driver failed to allow sufficient clearance for the child to pass and the lorry struck his foot, dragged him from the horse, and injured him severely. The child was in hospital for a long time as a result. The marks of the vehicle, on the road, continued the constable, showed that defendant was three feet on his wrong side.

Jeffrey who pleaded guilty said lie was going to camp shortly and asked for leniency. He was fined the amount of costs, including witnesses expenses, £3 16s 6d.
