NEAT MAORI TRIBUTE

CEREMONY AT SCHOOL OPENING

Mr W. A. McCracken, chairman of the llangitaiki Dairy Company, was honoured ii; a somewhat unusual fashion yesterday, when lie officiated at the opening of the now Paroa Schoolroom, a detailed report of which will appear in next issue. He was introduced by Mr J. Riini, chairman of the school committee, and later was the recipient of a carved ash tray from the pupils of the school.

In approaching him to officially open the school, Mr Riini said: "It is the unanimous Avish of our people, that you Sir, be asked to perform this ceremony. Our people had many dealings Avith you in your busy public life, and they trust you knowing that you the interests of this district and the Maori people at heart. It is fitting therefore, that you Avho are helping to educate the elders in their farming operations, should open this building Avhere Ihe farmers of the future Avill be educated. It giA-es me great pleasure, therefore to hand you this key, Avhich AA r e hope Avill open up, not merely a building but a path of knowledge for the future generations of children, Maori and Pakcha

alike."
