A PROBLEM SOLVED

A NEW LEARN-TO-SWIM POOL

One of the problems that has stood in the way of the success of the "Learn-to-Swim" campaign has been the lack of swimming pools. At a recent meeting of the National Coun cil of Physical Welfare and Recreation. Dr Petti t. President of the Auckland Swimming Centre, brought to its notice the miniature pool which has been tried out with outstanding success at the Cornwall Park School in Auckland. Since then it has become plain to all the authorities responsible for swimming tuition that this provides an admirable solution of the problem both in the schools and elsewhere. In fact some of the enthusiasts who had found their work paralysed in the country schools by lack of swimming facilities consider that the success of this simple pool is almost too good to be true. The Education authorities are now solidly behind the extension of this idea. Actually, however, the miniature swimming pool is sufficient in depth for the teaching of adult swimming also. A convenient size of pool is, for [small schools, :?0 feet by 12 feet, bli't for adult swimming the pool may, with advantage, be larger. The Minister of Internal Affairs, under whose direction the Physical Welfare and Recreation Movement is organised, is anxious that the merits of this pool should be widely advertised. The treatment of the water with chlorine preparations to ensure sterilisation is very simple, as is the construction of the pool itself, all of "which can be done by amateur labour. Any people who may be interested in the installation of such a pool as an amenity for private use may secure all details from the Physical Welfare and Recreation branch.
