ACTIVITIES IN DISTRICT

SOCIETY MEETS

At the meeting of the Horticultural Society of Whakatane on Friday the president referred in his address to the loss that that the Society had suffered in the death of the patron, Dr Wad more. Mr G. R. Kent eulogised the late Dr Wadmore, who had rendered signal services,, and the members stood in silence as a mark of respect. The minutes were read and confirmed and the balance sheet, which showed a credit ol £(> lijs, was approved. ' The election of officers followed and produced some discussion when the nomination of the patron occurred, it being agreed that the suitability of several nominees was doubtful. It was resolved finally that Mr J3. S. Barry be elected patron. Other officers are: President: Mr G. R. Kent; vice-presidents: Mesdames Sullivan and H. Withy; secretary: Miss G. Kent; committee: Mesdames W. E. Bridger, E. B. Brunton, F. J. Appleby, A. E, Hawkcn, W. R. Boon, W. R. Sloane, G. R. Kent, H. M. Dewar, C. Black, and Mr C. R. Taylor; stewards: Mesdames H. M. Dewar, W. Bridger, W. R. Sloane and A; E. Hawken.

It was decided to hold the annual show on November 18„ and to endeavour to obtain the Parish Hall for the purpose. Further matters which received attention included the apportioning of prize money and wide discussion resulted in the allocation on a different basis of the prize money in the Juvenile Division, ensuring that the respective sections received prizes more commensurate with their nature than was the case last year.

Several sections in the senior division also were reconstructed. Nothing was decided when the appointment of judges came up for consideration and the matter w 7 as deferred pending enquiries by the committee.
