BONFIRE AT OHOPE
ARRANGEMENTS FOR
SATURDAY ' ' I XC, -J !'■ '• FIREWORKS AND DISPLAY The general disappointment displayed at the decision of Mr A. L. Luke to forgo the usual bonfire and fireworks display at Awakeri this year on account oi the benzine restrictions, has led a group of Ohope residents and several businessmen in the town to club together with a view to promoting' a similar show, though on a lesser scale, at Ohope beach on Saturday evening next (November 4th).
Details for the arrangements were discussed yesterday, and already a substantial sum has been collected for the purchase of fireworks of a spectacular nature. The idea is to perpetuate the effort which has been so ably carried out by Mr A. L. Luke for the past twenty years, and to which the residents of the whole district had learnt to look forward to with plensnre and anticipation. It was with particular interest in the children too, that those responsible decided to stage the display which Avill include a bonfire, fireworks display, and if possible selections by the pipe band, and some amusing skits by a clowning troop.
Children will bo invited to bring their own smaller crackers, squibs, etc., while the promoters will devote their funds to the purchase of the larger and more spectacular displays. If there should be any person interested in the event and who may feel inclined to assist it, they are notified that donations will be received at the BEACON Office and acknowledged.
