COMPETITION CRICKET

PAROA'S GOOD WIN

central defeats whakatane

The uncertainty of cricket was again demonstrated on Saturday when Whakatane alter their good performance the previous wenk were defeated outright by Paroa who were playing their first competition game. The easy defeat of Hillcrest by Central on the latter team's home ground was also a minor surprise. Rain held up play in both games but not sufficiently to spoil tlie aflernoon's sport or to

such an extent as to give any team an additional advantage.

THE SCORE BOARD Batting Gillam 50 not out Melson 33 Jackson 32 Bowling Brockett 5 wickets for 19 runs Gillam 5 wickets for 20 runs Parkes 4 wickets for 18 runs Whaaktane's opening innings produced the poor total of 15, which was hardly bettered by Paroa who, however, scored 78, Howat (20 not out) and Moore (19) contributing a useful partnership. With a better start in the second knock Whakatane declared with seven wickets down for 105 runs and with 45 minutes remaining. An outright win was achieved—but not by Whakatane —Paroa, thanks to a forceful knock by Gillam (50 not out) and Cleland (20 not out) passing their opponents total with a little time to spare. Gillam five wickets for 20 runs off five overs and Parkes four for 18 off seven overs bowled well for their respective teams.
