THUG COMES OPEN
Alternatives tor Germany SECKETAKY OF WAR'S SPEECH At the close of the seventh week of the war, Mr Hore-Belisha, in an outline to the House of Commons stated that there were three courses open for Nazi Germany, if she were to pursue the conflict which she had precipitated. They were: (a) To endeavour to gain the victory bj' the prosecution of the war by the utilisation of the full strength of her land, sea and air forces. (b) To, remain quiescent hoping that the Allies- would take the initiative and attack the German defences. (c) To hold off the common offensive by the offer of peace terms which would appear to vindicate her in the ej'es of the world. It was against the last of these that we should be most carefully on our guard, said Mr Hore-Belisha, as it had l been proved that the pledged word of the present German government could jtot be accepted. Before any peace terms could be entertained, they must come from a source of nothing but the guarantee of a new order from which the Nazi menace had been removed.
