HERD TESTING

FIGURES FOR THE DISTRICT BEST RECORD TO GISBORN*E? Nearly 20,000 cows were tested by the Bay of Plenty and East Coast Herd Improvement Association during the period ended October 4. There are 22 groups under the association's control the district extending from Katikati to Wairoa. There are four groups in the Gisborne district, two on the Coast and one in Wairoa, the total number of cows south of Opotiki being nearly 3000. The association's average butterfat production for the period from 19,,831 cows was 291b of butterfat with a 4.2 test. Only one of the Gisborne groups fell below this aver age, while the Manutuku group reached 371b. One of the Coast and the only Wairoa groups were hardly up to the average.

The Gisborne district had the hon our of having the highest herd in the association, this herd, in the Waipaoa group, averaging 021b..

although only four cows were tested. However, the same group had the next best figure, a herd with 21 cows tested averaging 491b of fat per cow, a figure which equalled the performance of a Whakatane herd of 35. The group averages are tabulated
