AN OFFICIAL FAREWELL

Now that it is becoming increasingly obvious that New Zealand's first military contingent, now in camp, will be sent abroad the BEACON takes the liberty that Whakatane and district combine in staging a special farewell social and dance in honour of those patriotic young men who have volunteered for active service. To date nothing official has been done. Towards Christmas it is understood, the men will be coming home for their final leave. This would present an admirable opportunity for the suggested function, and it is certainly our duty to see that it is carried out.
