tElie of pientg Published Wednesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20th, 1939. the lift of spring
IN spite of wars and rumours of wars, 'it is hard to be depressed in the Spring- With nature smiling on all sides, mankind cannot but feel the native urge to take the optimistic viewpoint and to plan afresh for the brighter days a - head. This instinct is born in us, a legacy from time immemorial and cannot be suppressed by the crazy activities of the nations of the world at large. In the smiling Bay of Plenty, we have perhaps greater cause to feel the elevation of the new season, than any other part. The countryside is green with promise and dairy returns are calculated to be well 'in advance of previous years. To the farmer who is the keeper and guardian of the all-important grass, the Spring means everything. On its opening and passage he bases his reckoning for the returns of the entire season. The present season bears nothing but rich fulfilment, and in spite of the misgivings felt for the price of produce, the growing problem of efficent and reliable labour, there is a definite lift in the minds of agriculturalists generally. It is the same in the town where the first repercussions from the declaration of war made 'itself felt in the very alarming drop in business which lasted for the best part of a month. Calculations were upset, and planning for the recognised shopping season went sadly astray. But economic stability is steadily coming back. People must live, war or no war. The business barometer has shown a welcome rise since the opening of the present month. The habitual customs of the Spring have asserted themselves in spite of all misgivings, and optimism now reigns where a short month ago only gloomy forboding and pessimism were apparent.
