CONTRADICTORY

GOVERNMENT POLICY ASSAILED

PRODUCTION AND COSTS

A vital point was touched on at Thursday's meeting of the sub-pro-vincial executive of the Farmers' Union when Mr R. Dunning moved to the effect that they should register an emphatic protest against the contradictory policy of the Government which, on the one hand, asked the dairy farmers to increase production, and on the other hand tied farmers down to a price below the •statutory l-equiremcnts which was inadequate to meet the lull cost of "production.

The Hon C. E. McMillan (Tauranga) said a united protest by one body was needed when he spoke to n motion asking for the support of :all sections of the community for a protest. He said the fact that the word "Primary" had been omitted from the title of the marketing biii gave a glorious opportunity for the farmers to get on side and show the offside fis tlie general -public would be affected by the Bill. t Goods Seized. Mr Lambert said the Rangitaiki daiiy factory by judicious buying had obtained a large quantity ol iron and piping. A Government inspector came along with three big lorries and took the iron away. They had commandeered iron from YV'hakatane firms. Mr Dunning: Why didn't the directors tell us these things? Mr Lambert: I don't know. If you don't elect directors to tell you these "things you will never know. How could the farmer produce if he could not get iron for his pig pens. The inspector had a list of stocks, for he knew exactly what firms held. The company should not ihave given the stocks up.
