WARRANTS OF FITNESS
BRING GRIST TO STATE'S MILL CHARGES IN WHAKATANE The presiding justices, Messrs G. A. Brabant and R. J. D. Brown, lieard several traffic cases 'when they held the monthly sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Whakatane on Wed*nesday. They fined Hector Drew McKenzie 10s and costs 12s when he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a car without a warrant of fitness at | Ohinepanea on July 9. j On a similar charge Rua Hiki was fined 10s and 17s costs, Trevor Drew' Vincent Ewen 10s and 12s costs, John Merito 10s and costs 17s, Thomas Denby Peake 10s and costs 12s. Failure to possess a driver's license or a warrant of fitness cost Eric Matthew Pirrie, now of Ngaruawahitf military camp 20s and 10s costs and 10s and 10s costs. William Clifford Harris was charged with speeding and w r as fined £2 and 10s costs. Gordon Oswald was given a penalty of £2 and 10s costs for driving a truck without a heavy traffic license. Much evidence was called when Inspector J. H. Delves (avlio prosecuted most of the previous offenders) brought a charge against Stewart McK. Phillips (Mr T. E. Hamerton) taxi driver, of Taneatua, of negligent driving on August 30, the case arising out of a collision on
the bridge over the Waimana river. ( Phillips pleaded not guilty. Mr Brab ant said that the question seemed to be whether the bridge was a oneway or a two-way structure. It might be possible for two small cars to pass and the Bench would give defendant the benefit of the doubt and dismiss the charge.
