COUNCILLOR'S INTEREST
ROADS, DOGS AND DRAINS CR F. PRIDED I. JX ACTIVE Cr F. Prideaux was a "mass of busi ncssf at Monday night's meeting of the Whakatanc Borough . -Council, rand when he was not ventilating burning grievances lie was speeding up the discussions with one eye rtn the clock. Cr W. Sullivan sought "the explanation in the fact that Cr Prideaux had forgotten his dose of ; a well known, remedy that, morning; -the Mayor, Mr B. S, Barry, was -m ; adherent of the theory that Cr Pri- > deaux had taken a double dose. He - described his frame of mind as con- ' tentious.
Cr Prideaux fired, his first volley when the borough foreman's report was read. That document stated that river shingle had been lightly spread on several streets, including Douglas : Street. "My experience after walking 200 yards down it each morning is that .you have to take off your shoes and •empty out the shingle," lamented Cr iPrideaux. ■"Wear boots," said Cr Sullivan. -Cr Prideaux brushed that interjection aside. He moved that the remainder of Douglas Street from Salonika street to the junction of Alexandria and the whole of that Avenue, should be tar sealed forthwith. He was not going to ask for a concrete footpath though the other had them. 'Cr Sullivan was sure the works committee would be only too pleased to do the work if the finance committee made the money .available. As Cr Prideaux was a member ol :i;he finance committee they could nc • <loubt expect the money. He seconded the motion, The work had brer • decided on five years ago. NO MONEY. The council could only do th< work if it had the money said the Mayor. It did not have the monev. Other streets Aver e crying out foi —tar sealing, said Cr Canning. Th< finance was not available. "There is plenty of finance avail
-able these days'' said Cr Sullivan, "We can't do it by high finance, like taking over a reserve bank" said Cr Canning. Cr G. Otlcy sympathised with Cr Prideaux. but could not support the motion. Perhaps a footpath could be -put down. Cr Sullivan said the wor&s committee had discussed the question of sealing Lovelock Street, The foreman was also keen l-o do Russell and Ilaig . streets, but il" looked as if there woulc! be no money. Cr Prideaux was justified in his pro test as representing his area, said Cr Sullivan. It was hard for him to have to take three strides and slip back two, but he would find that the road would be all right when he had consolidated it in time. Cr Sullivan said there was no chance of doing the work at present but the matter would be "kept steadily in view.'' The motion was lost on the voices, Crs Prideaux and Sullivan alone giving an "aye." DOGS IN STRAND. Cr Prideaux next snuffed the battle •and galloped into the fray when the inspector's report w r as dealt with. This said that two dogs had been -destroyed, and the Strand was now free Jrom dogs excepting those of ■■fivn r*\T T nf>r<c mnntinnpcl ~\Trc
two owners mentioned neiorc—.ms "N. Ghing and Mr A. Hayter. Cr Prideaux moved that all dogs -'found off leads in the Strand next "week be destroyed. It would be a pity to see Cr "Prideaux's dog destroy cd } baid Cr A. ■J. Canning, Cr Prideaux said that his dog had ~ been under control, yet h? thought he had been the only dog owner in--tcrviewed. Tf'hey could not destroy the dugs the Mayor. They could only prosecute the owners. The dogs should be destroyed, or his dog given a special dispensation, said Cr Prideaux. However, he would i-move that the dog owners be prosecuted if the dogs were not kept im,aler control. Cr C. G. Paisley seconded this. It was time they enforced the bylaw, agreed the Mayor. The two . owners had been given numerous warnings. The motion was carried. DRAINAGE MATTER. Cr Prideaux had several severe - -digs at Strand business people when -the dust nuisance was under consideration, but he was not fully in -action again until a letter was read at foot of next columii)
Jirom Mr A. Allen, promising an ease mcnt over the Maraetotara drain ■ which ran through a new subdivision from King Street to Douglas Street. "That is generous" said Gr Pridcaux. ''He is giving an easement L over my property, If there is any ■ consideration going I would like it-" "No doubt you will get the usual consideration'' said Cr Ottey. "I think it is a shilling." "I think you arc in a contentious 3 frame of mind'' said the Mayor, s "Haven't I the right to be?" asked Cr Prideaux. ''Will you give the council an easement?'' asked the Mayor. "Willingly and without a eonsidc eration" said Mi Prideaux. n The Mayor moved that Cr Pridcaux 1- and Air Allan's offers be accepted n and the borough solicitor instructed d to prepare the necessary easements. ) This sva's carried, 9
