Pkntv agriculture oO years ago are contained in the following extracts from a paper or 1889.
"An expert in 11 ax dressing says that when visiting Canaan, To Puke, lately, he saw sufficient flax for two flax mills. Unfortunately all this flax belongs to the Maoris."
"There are about AOOO sacks of maize in Te Poke still to bo delivered a„nd the carters are complaining about the impassable state of the roads, especially through Te Puke swamp. Thi.s has resulted from the County Council compelling the contractors to round up the roads, and with the weather the ro:ids soon got into a state of slush."
"At the meeting ofi the Auckland Waste Lands Board on Thursday last a letter was received from Mr G. V. Steward re the proposed classification of Stewart-town and a memo was received from the Minister of Lands recommending that "the matter should stand over for the 1 rcj sent, pending certain arrangements regarding tramways.
"An application was received from I\lr Jonathan Brown to lease an avca mii the Rangitaiki River, also from Mr John Brown for 200 nca.' Matata."
