HEADS PARK

LEASE TO THE BOROUGH AN ABSURD CLAUSE Matters concerning the lease of reclamation and other areas were be•forc the Whakatane Harbour Board at its meeting on Friday. When it considered the draft leases foi bicentennial Park members commented on one clause which stated that if the borough portion of the park were destroyed by flood the borough must replace it. Mr J. W. Sumner, chairman, stated that the clause seemed absurd to him. The area inside the groyne and the flat rock had never, so far as be could been affected by flood. The borough would no doubt take all due precautions against scour. The solicitor was quite agreeable to having the clause removed. Mr Sumner mentioned that the slipway was on the borough roadway, and it might be necessary, if at "some time the road was extended seawards, to move the slip to the park area. The emendation to the lease was approved. The park was referred to again a little later on when, it was mentioned that portion, oj} the concrete on the harbour board's stone wall bad broken away. It was only a very small section which had been affected, said the chairman and it could be easily repaired. Most of the wall was a first class job.
