BACK TO THE SHEDS.

Dependent so completely on its primary industries for its general level of prosperity, it is high time that the legislators of this Dominion introduced some enactment that would protect the important dairying industry from being bled white of its workers. The response to the call for volunteers in the country was comparatively much better than in the towns. As a result, we already have the picture of many a retired farmer going 'back to the shed.' There are actual cases even at this _ea,rly stage, o.f women being compelled to work in this respect after years of retirement, but the worst threat of all is the tendency of some farmers to dispose of portion of their herd in order to try and cope the work themselves, owing to the complete lack of hands. Steps must be taken to correct any movement which is likely to result in a lowered dairy output.
