WHAKATANE HOLDS BIRTHDAY
A SUCCESSFUL AFTERNOON The tenth birthday o£ the Whakatanc Women's Institute was well attended on Tuesday afternoon in the Parish Hall with the president, Mrs K. Armstrong in the chair. Very few visitors from sister institutes were able to be owing to petrol hut' nevertheless the afternoon was very successful. A proposal by Mrs Sutcliffe to elect Mrs Stewart a Life Member was well .supported. Mention was made that the Whakatnne Institute had' won first prize at the recent Anglican Flower Show. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to the Rev S'. G. Caulton for his kind offer of the Parish Hall for any efforts by the institute on behalf of the Red Cross Association. The report of the special meeting in connection with the proposed :.iew hall was read and adopted, G AIN IKS'. i After the business of the meeting was d : s»osccT of members spent an enjoyable time in the game of 'Telegrams," and" in several competitions, amongst which was an intelligence test won by Mrs MnThoTland, a Peanut Race, won by Mrs Wheeler and other Peanut Race by Mrs O'Rourke. Ladies competing in the "Travelling race caused great merriment and the prize was awarded to Mrs X. Matthews. It was decided to commence the November meeting at 1.45 n.m.. in order to dispose of the business as quickly as possible, and allow as much time as possible to a talk to lie given by M>'s McNaughton on Vier recent trin. which she made under the A.C.W.W. scheme, COMPETITIONS. Competitions were Avon by Mrs Wheeler;, best flower, Mrs Brown, crocheted tea cosy. Five new members were elected. Mrs Littlejohn offered to take charge of the sole institute calendars and members requiring them are asked to place their orders without delay. A feature of the afternoon was the tasteful arrangement of the hall by the committee, flo\vers > rugs and tea waggons giving a pleasant and •unusual effect. The new banner was also on show, and Mrs Symons was accorded a unanimous and enthusiastic vote oil thanks for the time and beautiful work which she had expended upon it. The afternoon closed with the roll call of members able to give accommodation to adults or children in the event of the evacuation cf the cities.
