WAR FUNDS

NO COLLECTIONS AT PRESENT

STATEMENT BY MAYOR

The Minister og Internal Affairs has recently made a statement on the matter of war funds and it is proposed that these should be under some form of national control deid-

ing with

1. The purposes for which war funds may be raised.

2. The methods bj T which such funds may be raised..

o. The bodies by which such funds may be raised.

4. The bodies by which such funds shall be expended.

Such legislation as may be necessary to control the position is being prepared, and an early announcement is expected said the Mayor. Mr B. S. Barry.

It is not considered that there is any urgent need to make appeals before the matter is? placed on, a proper, footing, and bodies already in the field soliciting donations have been asked to call a halt,.

As far as Wliakatane is concerned no general effort has been made. The public are therefore advised in the meantime not to make any donations unless the canvasser can produce an authority stamped and signed.
