POACHING FOR FUR SEALS
Occasionally the Forest and Bird Protection Society receives complaints about the poaching of fuV sea]s ? which are protected by law. A ccntnry ago these animals were very numerous on certain parts of the coast of the South Island, but they were nearly ex terminated by un controlled gangs of killer,;,. The Fisheries Act provides for j: penalty of £100 for seal taken in breach of the protective law, and it is also stipulated that any equipment such as vessels or cars used by a poacher is liable to confiscation.
