JACKSON SHIELD

WON BY THE PAKEHAS

SCRATCH TEAMS AT TANEATUA

The Jackson, Shield, held for some years by the Maoris, changed hands r.t Taneatua on Saturday Avhen the Pake has beat them by 20 points to nil. Both teams were below strength, and the Pakeha team was practically a Taneatua one. Tlie game was not verv interesting. It was largely a scramble and both ; sides were suffering from end of season feeling. Eleven Maoris and twelve Pakehas took the field at first, but others came on later to make no the fifteens. Within a few minutes K. Hollis ran over in the corner to open the scores. The kick missed. Then Dnnstan scored when he the ball away from a defender. That kick went over (8-0). The Maoris surged down but were driven back and once were lucky to save a try. There was no further score till half time.

In the second spell another Pakeha try came, then the Maoris looked dan Serous for a lime, but the Pakehas cleared. C r app had been playing solidly at fullback but he was caught fo- once bv Old, and Mitchell gathered in the ball to run over unopposed.. Frankland missed the kick. Then it was seen that a blue man was up field and the Pakehas were offered another shot at goal. However they would not take it. (14-0).

Riini missed a shot at goal. The Maoris were dangerous till offside checked the movement. The Pakeha team took the unper hand again and Sisam'scored after a semm near the line. Next to score was Chambers after a tvpical run. Both tries were unconverted. Mr F. Darvill refereed. At halftime two midgut teams took the field.. The little fellows played quite well; in 'fact the game was better to watch than the senior ttruggle
