A TAURANGA SUGGESTION | — i WAR-TIME FAR.M WORK j """An interesting plan for the formation of a Land Girl's Army for farm work was put forward at a special meeting of the Tauranga Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union and it was decided to make this suggestion to the Government. The scheme came from the women's division and was put forward by Mrs J. A. Mehnrry who said that at the meeting of the women's division tusVt day a resolution had been adopted asking the farmers' unio.n to move in the direction of arranging the?, training of girls in the agricultural colleges for light farm work. The object would be to train town girls, and it was suggested that a number might be trained at the Ruukm'a Farm of Instruction, fl giris were trained their help would be a factor in assisting the Kmpii'e in the crisis. It had been suggested that uniforms be worn by the girls. The chairman, Mr A. C. Harrison. sa ; d there was an acute shortage of help in the country. ' Mr F. W. Keam suggested that the union should approach the Government and ask them in what direction help was desired. After the information was received another meeting of the branch could be ord'ted. A plan could then he considered. Mr H. G. Angus said the suggestion made by Mr Keam would be submitted to the provincial executive of the union. Mr G. Chapman said that in the last war the girls in Great Britain joined the Land Army and continued in that occupation for the duration of the war. He moved: That th's branch believes the time is onportune for the formation of a Land Girls' Army and agrees to lay the request of the Women's Division bpfore the proper authorities: that a co])v of the motion be sent to M)' ,F. W. Doidge, M.P. Mr Pollock seconded the motion, t which was carried unanimously.
