OHOPE RESIDENT ATTACKED "Dog bites man" is not news, but according to the hoary newspaper story, "man bites dog ; ' is news. Certainly "man bites toheroa 1 " is a common occurrence and one that the most skilful of newspaper treatment could hardly make very thrilling, no matter how pleasant the experience is from a gustatory point of view. However the converse "toheroa bites man" is sufficiently unusual to merit a bit of discussion. Naturally the incident occurred on Ohope Beach. The victim was a large man who, like Hitler Avith the takes a great interest in toheroas and docs his best to remove them from their present unpleasant existence and absorb them in a greater Reich. He was digging Avith bare hands in the sand Avhen he struck his thumb violently on the sharp, open shell of n lurking old man toheroa. The thumb Avas gashed deeply and, Avhen the toheroa smartly closed its shell it neatly nipped off a portion of the flesh. Normally, boAvever the toheroa pursues a nolicy, and though ready to defend itself it does not often take the offensive.
