SPRING FLOWERS
ON SHOW IN WH AK AT AN E HIGH QUALITY BLOOMS "The flowers that bloom in the Spring tra la, "Give promise of merry sunshine. "As wc merrily dance an:l we sing, tra la, "We welcome the hopes that they bring ) tra la, "Of a summer of roses and wine; of a summer of roses and wine.'' Even if those present were not inclined to merrily dance and sing, the flowers entered at the Anglican Flower Show in the Parish Hall yesterday were doing their part as forerunners of a bountiful summer. The soft pastel colours of the banked flowers, and the fragrance they gave out, made the hall a pleasant place - in which td linger amongst the shift— ing groups of people, and in spite "of the petrol restrictions the show • can be counted as very successful. The standard in the bulb section was particularly and Mrs Maunder's champion bloom was a fine ilower. The judges, Mr and Miss Jonnston (Opotiki). were well satisfied with the general standard of the flowers and fruit, and Mrs Sloane and Mrs Farmer, -who judged the cookery and fancy work classes, also had exhibits of a high grade from which to decide. A feature was the good entry in the children's classes. The produce stall and competitions, ' in charge of Mesdames Shaw ( Barry • and Morgan did good business, and most of the vegetables and plants for sale were quickly snapped up. Excellent work in catering for the ■ thirsty throng was done by Mesdames Goodall, Hill, Chambers, Rodgers, ' Sims and Suckling who were in • charge of the tearoom. Two of the busiest ladies perhaps were Mesdames Sutcliffe and Rangit secretary and assistant-secretary, and 'the success of the show reflected the • efficiency of their arrangements.
