ROAD ROUND LAKES

SEALING THIS SUMMER TIKITERE HILL JOB The deviation of the dangerous Snake Hill at Tikitere, which will shorten the Rotorua-Whakatane high way by approximately 35 chains by eliminating a number of awkward bends, has now been practically com plcted by the Public Works Department, and it is anticipated that a start will be made shortly on the deviation on the south side of the hill, which will also reduce the length of the highway by some chains. A Diesel power shovel with a capacity of 800 yards per day t is engaged on the improvement of the road round the bluff at the southern end of the Rotoiti section of the' route, and also a 12-yard -scoop drawn by a 9T> horse power tractor. Preparation, of the metal base to take tarr-sealing on the RotoruaWhakatane main highway on the Rotoma Hill, and the section of road flanking the lake, has been taken in hand, and permanent surfacing will probably be undertaken during the comings ummer season. When that work has been completed, the road will be parctically unrecognisable to motorists who have not travelled over it for the past three or four years, as the alignment has been altered to a major degree, eliminat'ng a number of bezels and easing the grade to make th£route a first-class highway.
