RESPONSE IN WHAKATANE DIRECTIONS TO MAORIS At Wliakatane so far. there have been <15 applications from Europeans to join the military force, and seven from Maoris t but as the Whakatanc post office simply forwards the forms to the recruiting depot it is not possible to give any particulars of tlio classes in which the men fall, or their names. The natives applying have been instructed to take their forms to Rotorua, and any other Maoris who desire to enlist should follow this course and apply direct to Rotorua, The men who presented themselves here all seemed of a good type. The average age was 25 or 26 and four of them were married. Medical examination begins to-day. The post office advises that Whakatane now has 310 registrations in the national military reserve.
