OBITUARY

MRS MARTHA LAVINIA BENNER A resident of Rotorua with long associations with the Bay of Plenty, Mrs Martha Lavinia Bonner, died at her home at Rotorua s on Monday night. She was 78 years of age. Mrs Benner had an association with Maketu and Rotorua of over fifty years. Born in Aklershot, England, she came to New Zealand at the age of 20 years. Her husband, the late Mr Albert Benner, was for many years postmaster at Maketu, in the days when it was an, important town in the Bay of Plenty. The telephone l'nes then ran along the coast, and Maketu boasted of a courthouse, a church with a resident minister, a full-time postmaster, and a regular shipping service. The Benner family lived at Maketu for many years, until the Tarawera eruption. There were four children,, two sons and two daughters, all of whom are still living.
