MATATUA TEAM

,/XAINUI shield challenge ' \ - ■ r I MANY MEN NOT AVAILABLE Disappointment that the Tainui Maniapoto team would not be fully representative of Bay football, wa; expressed by members of the Whakatane Rugby Sub.Union Executive at its meeting on Tuesday night, when Mr J. Hohapata reported that Rangitaiki and Opotiki had declined to change the date of their Hurinui Shield match, so that players would not be available from those teams. The chairman, Mr W. S. Henderson, said that when the Whakatane sub-union, had promised a grant of £5 towards expenses they had been under the impression that a fullstrength team would be sent, but it now seemed that it would be cut down to anything but a representative team. Rangitaiki and Opotiki were playing the shield Galatea had informed him that they would not participate in the visit to the East Coast, find TaUranga were also very unhappy about it. It looked as though the team would be picked from Whakatane alone. They had promised the £5 provided a first_class team was sent, provided the other unions granted a similar amount, and provided the games w T ere played in Whakatane, if the trophy came here. Mr Gee and Mr Ormond agreed that the defection of the other union changed the position regarding the grant. However theyi agreed, with Mr Henderson that if possible they should support the team financially. Its expenses would be heavy, but they did not feel like paying out for a purely social visit. It was agreed to adopt Mr.-Hender-suggestion to await developments and leave the matter open for discussion at the next meeting. HOCKEY ON DOMAIN.
