THE MAIN HIGHWAY
Sir, —''Main Highway Through Whakatane" writes in your issuejxdT"'" Monday last that ''it has been said in the street that the highway crossing reclaimed land would ruin the and that this is a bogey put up by a few." I have heard something of the same sort of argument and it makes me think a bit. It seems to me that it' is not a question whether the main road should cross reclaimed land or not, but whether more reclamation should Miscarried out, and which will place if the road goes via. Quay rStreet. We already have the proof that reclamation has gone far enough and as the harbour is very import-* ant to the whole district the slightest chance of doing damage ever so small must be ayoided, I think thoscr in business will realise this. Any harbour engineer will tell you that + it is a mistake to block up the tidal area in small harbours li'te Whaka_ ta.ne. Your correspondent will also learn this from the officers of tha boats who use the harbour. You will agree that it is wise to BE CAUTIOUS.
