NEW DEPOT
COUNTY TO LOOK FOR SITE PRESENT YARD TOO SMALL A dec'sion that the works committee should go into the question of selecting a new site for a depot and workshop was taken by the Wha katane County Council at its meeting on Tuesday. The matter was brought up by a paragraph in the minutes of the works committee which stated that it had directed the engineer to report to it what beneficial temporary alterations could be effected to the workshop, and that in respect of a satisfactory permanent depot the council should indicate its policy. It was stated that there was not much that could be done to make conditions better for the mechanic, and anything done would only be temporary. The council Avonld soon have to look for a permanent depot, as at present there was no room to 1-old all appliances, and machinery. The council's activities had grown, but its facilities had not grown with it. Cr If. C. McC ready said it would be a good idea to get on to the matter immediately. Cr ,V. J. Hurt asked where the depet would be. and Cr J. L. Burnett sa'd that it might be somewhere near Awakcri, though that was a matter for decision. Some centra] site might be best, but there was the question ol travelling as the staff mostly lived in town. Some time ago it had btvn proposed to use port'on of the harbour board i oclamation_ and then a s ite .over the bridge was suggested. Tile depot would certainly be beyond the borough boundarv
