THE MAIN HIGHWAY
Sir —It has been said in the street 5 that the Main Highway crossing reclaimed land would ruin, our harbour. AVhat nonsense. This is a bogey put up by the very few who lefuse, from a selfish motive, to sign the petition. But we'll do very well without them. Now what happens. The overflow tidal water goes out over the land with the tide anl returns into the river with the tide. It comes back into the river laden with silt. This takes place twice n day. The accumulated silt is carried down to the river mouth where it is a menace. The highway passing over reclaimed land would prevent this. So the reclamation by the Main Highwaj r would be a blessing instead of a detriment to the harbour. Th c small amount of volume of water interfered with would be infinitesimal r.nd would not appreciably affect thc rush of water out of the liver. Yours etc., MAIN HIGHWAY THROUGH WHAKATANE.
