RUGBY QUEEN A meeting of the Rugby and Athletic Queen committee will be held in the Borough Chambers on Thursday night. FIRST OFFENCE A statutory first offender appeared in the Whakatane Poliee Court on Monday morning before Mr G. A. J. P., on a charge of intoxi- ' cation and was convicted and lined ; £1. BLESSSING IN DISGUISE In one way the snow in Central I Otago was undoubtedly a blessing in disguise. Landholders soy that literally tens of thousands of rabbits have been either smothered in their holes or have died of starvation. This will be- doubly welcome in view of the favourable breeding periods rabbits have enjoyed for tlie last two seasons. A VAGRANT George Oswald Townsend ? who was arrested by Constable O. Rice at Tancatua yesterday morning, appealed later before Messrs G. A. Brabant <*nd B. S. Barry, Justices of the Peace, at Whakatane charged with being an idle and disorderly person ill that he had insufficient lawful means of support. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. TOUCH OF SPRING The beautiful mild weather which town and district has been experiencing lately is j'et another indication of the near approach of spring. As one resident remarked yesterday, the weather was more in line Avith the usual Bay of Plenty weather. Clear and cloudless yesterdaj' was a particular joy to the residents at Ohope Bcach ? where children, taking advan tage of the school holidays spent the daj- on the beach and at least one hardy individual was to he seen indulging in a dip. OUT OF SEASON Excellent samples of new potatoes were dug by Mr C. Davis, No. 3 Road, Te Puke, on Wednesday one of the plants producing just over 4 lbs. Grown. near, or under hedges I this is not unusual in Te Puke at 'his time of the year, but when the potatoes are grown out in the | open and give results it is a sure sign of an early spring. Despite the frosts the potatoes survived until last week, when the bitterly cold snap cut the plants down. Not expecting results, Mr Davis decided to dig the roots, and was agreeably surprised at the returns.
BAY OF PLENTY MEN J. McXeile and J. J. Best both got tries in the minor unions game at Christchureh on Saturday, one report stating that Best was often ; of All Black standard, working well in the tight and showing speed and fire in the loose. Raymerit at fullback played an excellent game. THORNTON DOMAIN Messrs A. Hvland, C. M. Hyland, G. T. Smith G. W. Mexted and T. Craddock have been appointed as the Thornton Marine Domain Board, according to a notice in the Gazette. The domain is a little over six acres situated in the Awa-o-te-Atua Survey District. NO DONATION The Whakatane County Council at Tuesday's meeting regretted that it was unable to make a donation requested by the Whakatane Fire Brigade towards the annual Labour Day demonstration of Bay of Plenty Bri. | gades which this year is being held in Whakatane for the first time for five years. The brigade wrote stating that it desired on this account to make the function an unqualified success. BICYCLES REMOVED The owners of bicycles are warned that they should be on the alert against the activities of certain unprincipled young hooligans who make the habit of removing machines which may be left unattended. Reports from several owners shew that a number of machines were removed from the stand in front of The Rock, and lecovered from various parts of the Borough in more or less damaged condition.
