SCOUTS CONFER
IMPORTANCE OF JAMBOREE , ~ >' } ■< ' ■ WARNING TO OFFICERS "The year just past has been lull of interest to the scout and th? scouter and particularly full of work for the latter/' said District Commissioner F. N. Christian in presenting his annual report at the Hay of Plenty Scout meeting at Whaka. tane on Wednesday night. ''The Australian Jamboree, to which this district sent sixteen boys took up a great deal of time, but the principal consideration during the year has been in connection with our own centennial gathering and, touching as it does such a large proportion of our bovs this work has been particularly well worth Avhile. Tlie wise conditions imposed been the means of raising the standard of scouting and this will not be the least benefit of the great Jamboree. I am glad to be able to state that 101 hoys have enrolled from tne |Bay, this being 25 per cent more than we estimated. INCREASE IN NUMBERS. "Most troops have shown a numerical increase but the very large increase has been chiefly due to the formation of new troops at Onepu, Poroporo and Paengaroa. Our numbers now stand at 3-1:0, not counting non-warranted workers to Ihe number of 57, Avhose splendid service we are most happy to acknowledge. "We Avelcome to our movement: Mr P. M. Barclay, Acting S.M. and Rev Lueas ? Acting A.S.M. at Whakatane. Mr T. Watson S.M. and Mr A. Briggs A.S.M of Onepu, Mr A. Boswell S.M and Acting Cub Master Miss N. Carlyon of Poroporo, MiFrank Mead, Acting S.M at Tanea. tua, Mr Jack Acting A.S.M of Paroa, Mr A. C. Wright, Acting S.M and Mr T. Howard, Acting A. S.M. of Maketu, and the Rev A. T. Bartlett, Acting S.M at Te Puke With regret Ave ha\e lost from our ranks of warranted officers Mr S. 5 M. Chatfield, a, wonderfully successful leader first of all at Pongakawa and latterly at Te Puke and Maketu; also Cub -Master Miss S. Peppercorn of Tauranga, aaliosc Avork was of a very high standard. We were unfortunate, also, in that Mr J. J. Collins almost immediately after accepting the appointment of district secretary Avas moved to Paeroa. ''Not being able to open and operate an account Avitliout an authorised co-trustee I haA 7 e deposited the district fund, amounting to £9 2s Id, Avith the Tauranga committee. There is no alteration in the matter of the balance no funds haA-ing been raised and no payments Avorth recording having been made. SUCCESSFUL RALLIES. ''A very successful rally was held at Whakatane on NoA ? ember 5, 1938, the Tauranga Scouts being the Avin_ ners of the Boyd Cup and the Tiki trophy, both previously held by Te Puke; the BoAvyer Shield AA r as Avon by the Tauranga Cubs. The Onepu and Tauranga boys combined and had a A*ery successful camp at Whs. kamarama. Week-end camps have been held in A r arious parts of th:district. "Many important matters to do with tlie Jamboree haA*e yet to be decided, but I Avould like to counsel all Scouters that whilst this should be, and AA r ill be, a most important occurrence in scouting it is not a but a passing event. I do not Avish to minimise the Jamboree and the opportunity it will give to the boy to see Wellington and the Exto make contacts Avith his felloAv scouts and with those from abroad, but I do feel that in the routine Avork, in the priA*ate chats and in the small camp, the greatest character foundations can be laid. The rnoAement is not for spectacular displays, though these have their place, it is for the permanent ser. A T ice it can render to youth and in r that ideal it has not failed. ''It AA*as n.eecssary to make a decis. I ion regarding district colours and in consultation Avith your District Scout Master it Avas decided to adopt a green scarf Avith a red edge and that has been gazetted. TAURANGA'S ACTION. ''Tauranga has made a forward move so far as a home is concerned. There the committees of the Guides and Scouts haA T e joined forces and bought the old aerodrome building at tlie Avcstern end of -Elizabeth Street and obtained from the Tauranga Borough Council tlie lease of half an acre frontage on the harbour at a peppercorn rental for 21 years. The building has been raised two feet- it is being floored and lined by
