BOROUGH MATTERS

BUSINESS AT MONDAY'S MEETING The monthly meeting of the Whakatane Boorugh Council was held on Monday night. Councillors present were the" Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, Crs G. Otley, W. Sullivan, C. S. Armstrong, A. Hall, F. Prideaux, C. G. Caisley. The No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority by a letter in reply to a protest by the council regarding the rates fixed for shingle cartagc, advised that the right of contract was preserved. It was stated that the council had entered into a satisfactory contract. Inspector G. B. Edwards, Gisboine wrote stating that the police had no objection to the granting of a billiard saloon license to G. L. R. Kydd Advice was received from the Muni cipal Association that plans for national emergency precautions, emanating from sources other than the. Department of Internal Affairs, must bo regarded as unauthorised. RATING OPINION. The counsel to the Municipal Association gave his opinion that special rates are payable on premises occupied by Government departments. This referred to the premises in The Strand. The amount of special rates was £11 6s. Mr C. W. Good wrote stating thai lie had purchased a section in Russell Street, and tire proposed west entrance to the Domain would spoil his building plans. It was decided that the Mayor and Cr Armstrong should interview Mr Good. A letter Avas received Trom the Domain Board stating that it realised the desirability of further access from the west end of the Domain. Considerable delay must result if the board moved in the matter, and it suggested that the matter was one for the council. It would be pleased to give assistance. The Loans Board advised that a dwelling loan of £000' had been, sanctioned for a 15 year term at 4Vi per cent interest. TAXI MATTERS. The matter of taxi phones was referred to the Finance Committee. Five letters were received regarding the formation of a taxi association, the number of taxis in the borough, taxi phones etc. One from Mr.W. Cox, secretary of the owner's association, sajxl 'that h's association opposed the granting of more than seven licences. Permission was given to Mr V. Percy to erect a phone on the telephone post near the Regent Theatre. The Hockey and Cricket Querm Committee Avere giA r en permission to hold a procession and concert in The Strand between 12.15 p.m. and 1 p.m. on August 19, 26 and September 2, and for permission to take up a collection during the performance. Whakatane Amusements Ltd. sought permission to screen pictures on Christmas Day. It AA-as stated by councillors that pictures had been screened on Christmas Day in 1927: Christinas Day last year fell on a Sunday and there Avas no screening. The application aa a s favourably receiA'ed provided a suitable picture was shoAvn.
