CLANSMAN DAMAGED
strikes near cape colville Aun : ASHORE ftrt'AY The Northern Company's Clansman, commanded by Captain Cath_ cart, touched a reef off Cape Colville on Thursday morning, while en route to Whakatane from Auckland, and damaged her planking sufficiently seriously to make it necessary to beach her in Cabbage Bay 16 miles from Coromamlel on a mud and shingle bottom. She was in quite a good position, and it was hoped to refloat her later and bring her back to Auckland, where her cargo will! be transferred to the Toa, which may arrive here oh Saturday or Sun. day. - It was stated last night that she had been, re.floati.cl and was on way- to Auckland but this may not bo correct. The accident occurred at about 4 a.m. The Clansman had a full cargo on board, but it is not thought that anything will have been damaged as the floor of the hold is formed of timber about two feet above the bilges, and the perishable cargo was placed on top of rows of petrol drums. When the hold was sounded she was found to have made about a foot of water.
