WORK OF DEPARTMENTS The borough foreman, Mr W. S. Henderson in his report to the Whakatane Borough Council tabled at Monday night's meeting, said that the concrete retaining wall at The Heads park was now completed. The wall Avas extended an extra chain near the pilot's residence to connect with' harbo,ur board scheme and a further three chains of low reinforced wall has been built around the western end of the dressing sheds. Reclamation filling is progressing. Difficulty is being experienced in obtaining first class top soil for* this area. The construction of dressing sheds in rcinforccd concrete is well under way. One shed is ready for finishing plaster work and the other should bo completed within the next few days. Specifications are prepared and tenders called for plastering .of those buildings. - - \ All shingle for abbve work has been handled by the borough truck. The road near the Cave has been widened, an average of six feet and is a big improvement. Goulstone Road underground storm water drain of 15 chains in length has been completed. A new path has been formed and metalled in Toroa Street and Mat--atua Street and a necessary concrete pipe crossing is being set in. The path from school gate on McAlister Street has been reformed and metalled with fines similar work being done in Goulstone Road from Domain gates. The path and cycle track through the Domain has been covered with 2in depth of topdrc-ss. ing of fine metal. Centre traffic lines and pedestrian crossing have again been repainted and posts of Hillcrest protective fence also repainted.
Water Supply: Four new connections have been made. Recent excessive frosts caused damage to stop laps and a number of minor blowouts. Both galvanised mains in Valley Road and across Whakatane concrete bridge wco affected. At the request of Mr Worlev, tests of rate of flow etc. of Maraetotava Stream wore taken in separate • localities. Also at M>- Worlev's on tw,-> occasions I took readings of tbc reservoir level and Pulp Mill co-snmn-tion from 2 am. to 4 a.m. T n addition T spent som° time with T\ T »"' Worlev on water scheme layout during his rccent visit. The clectrical engineer. Mr F. W. Lysaght reported that the new secondary lines . in Domain Road and Francis Street have now been com.pletcd. Work has now been commenced on new lines in Toroa Street and Matatua Street. New mains ami sub-mains have been installed on the Russell Street substation to cope with the additional loading in Domain Road and Francis Street sections. Ten new service lines have been erected during the month. Installation re-inspection.: The work of the complete five yearly inspection of all premises connected" to the Borough Council's supply as required by the Public Works "D jpp.rtment, js being carried out and* should be completed by March 31 next at the present rate of progress* Waterworks Department: Thepumping plants have been in vice every day during the month and are in fair order.
