LAYING THE FOUNDATION

To lay the foundation of a herd of pigs ? which can be reasonably expected to producc successful results in both the show ring and the market is by no means an, easy task. The first step is to determine the tyue and character which it is reauired to breed. One of the chief considerations is to select the foundation animals from an old established herd, the property of a man of reputation, who is noted for the production of animals of a uniform type and character. It is possible that the outlay required may by somewhat greater than if the initial purchases were made from a number of herds where the true science of breeding lias not been studied, but there would not be anything approaching the same amount of cer tainty in the uniformity of their produce.
